In the projects first one month is dedicated to a thorough brush up of the basic skills & training of the techniques involved in the research project. Then the research interns are handed over an independent research title to work on.

Algae as a Source of Pharmaceuticals & Nutraceuticals

Algae are a rich and varied source of pharmacologically active natural products and nutraceuticals and their current market values are extremely high. The major products currently being commercialized or under consideration for commercial extraction include carotenoids, phycobilins, fatty acids, polysaccharides, vitamins, sterols, and biologically active molecules for use in human and animal health.Pharmaceutical industry is growing at a CAGR of around 8% while the global pharmaceutical market is forecasted to reach US$ 1043.4 billion in 2012.Abca BioSolutions is involved in following research projects under the area of Algae as a Source of Pharmaceuticals & Nutraceuticals

1. Abca Chlorella for Anti-Cancer Pharmaceutical Product

Abca BioSolutions is involved in development, production and commercialization of Chlorella with the name of ABCA CHLORELLA.Chlorella helps protect the body in its fight against both viruses and cancer. A series of studies during the 1980s showed that tumor growth in mice could be reduced or stopped by injecting a water solution of chlorella.Herbal Medicine Healing Cancer by Donald R Yance Jr, page 231

2. Production of Natural Astaxanthin in North Indian Climate

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid with unique cell membrane antioxidant functions. According to a growing body of scientific evidence, astaxanthin plays a role in supporting eye and heart health. Astaxanthin is not made in the human body and is currently obtained almost exclusively from dietary sources such as salmon and crustaceans. Its intense red color contributes to the color pigmentation of salmon, shrimp, crabs and other marine life. Due to astaxanthin�s unique molecular structure, position and distribution within cell membranes and lipoproteins, astaxanthin has been the focus of many clinical studies assessing its ability to support eye and heart health.

3. Algae as Source of Commercially Important Phytosterols

Phytosterols are recognized as important components of healthy diets and have been demonstrated to reduce blood cholesterol levels in hyper and normocholesterolemic subjects. Phytosterols may also inhibit colon cancer development. Furthermore, in vitro assays have demonstrated the antiinflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiulcerative, and antitumor capacities of macroalgae extracts rich in phytosterols. Thus, algae and their derived products can be an interesting source of dietary phytosterols compared to ceratin fruits and vegetables commonly used in human nutrition.

Planning a Scale-up Plant for Algal Biodiesel production (Demonstration Pilot Plant available)

Algae fuel, algal biofuel, or algal oil is an alternative to liquid fossil fuels that uses algae as its source of energy-rich oils. Also, algae fuels are an alternative to common known biofuel sources, such as corn and sugarcane. Algae cost more per unit mass than other second-generation biofuel crops due to high capital and operating costs, but are claimed to yield between 10 and 100 times more fuel per unit area. The United States Department of Energy estimates that if algae fuel replaced all the petroleum fuel in the United States, it would require 15,000 square miles (39,000 km2), which is only 0.42% of the U.S. map, or about half of the land area of Maine. This is less than ?1/7 the area of corn harvested in the United States in 2000.According to the head of the Algal Biomass Organization, algae fuel can reach price parity with oil in 2018 if granted production tax credits. Solazyme,[15] Sapphire Energy,[16] and Algenol,[17] among others have begun commercial sale of algal biofuel in 2012 and 2013, and 2015, respectively.We are Algal biofuel leader in INDIA with a successfull operating pilot algal Biodiesel Demonstration Plant. We claim to produce 2500 Leters of Algal Biodiesel/Acre/Year with the present technology and improving.The Algal Biodiesel produced by us with a Net Calorific Value of 40.936 Kj/gm and Flash point of 142 Deg. Centigrade.

1. Algae Strain selection and cultivation for commercial applications.

The project involves the identification, isolation and selection of algal strains for commercial application in Biodiesel or Pharmaceuticals. Studies are performed to standardize the mass cultivation for such strains using Photobioreactor developed by Abca BioSolutions Pvt. Ltd.

2.Algal Biodiesel Characterization

Blends of biodiesel and conventional hydrocarbon-based diesel are products most commonly distributed for use in the retail diesel fuel marketplace. Much of the world uses a system known as the "B" factor to state the amount of biodiesel in any fuel mix:

100% biodiesel is referred to as B100
20% biodiesel, 80% petrodiesel is labeled B20
5% biodiesel, 95% petrodiesel is labeled B5
2% biodiesel, 98% petrodiesel is labeled B2

Blends of 20% biodiesel and lower can be used in diesel equipment with no, or only minor modifications, although certain manufacturers do not extend warranty coverage if equipment is damaged by these blends. The B6 to B20 blends are covered by the ASTM D7467 specification. Biodiesel can also be used in its pure form (B100), but may require certain engine modifications to avoid maintenance and performance problems.

Carbon Dioxide Mitigation: Profitably reducing Carbon Dioxide in industry

Meantime, India plans to double coal production to feed a power grid still suffering blackouts.Its challenge: to curb greenhouse gases as its population and economy grow. In 2010, India voluntarily committed to a 20 percent to 25 percent cut in carbon emissions relative to economic output by 2020 against 2005 levels. It has made recent strides installing solar power, which it is expected to increase fivefold to 100 gigawatts by 2030. Under current policies, its carbon dioxide emissions will double by then, according to the International Energy Agency.2013 CO2 emissions: 2.6 billion tons, 2013 population: 1.2 billion
